One Joomla admin at a time does not scale

Updating Joomla by hand means logging in to each administrator, opening the Update screen, then the Extensions update screen, and repeating that for every site. With a handful of sites it is a chore. With a portfolio of client sites it is the job that keeps getting put off, and an extension left a release behind is how a site ends up on a vulnerability list.

mySites.guru pulls those pending updates into one place. You see what each site is waiting for, decide what to apply, and the updates run without you opening a single Joomla admin.

How bulk Joomla updates work

What it does, and where it stops.

Core updates, many sites at once
Update Joomla core on many sites from one screen. Updates stay within a major version: no 3 to 4 or 4 to 5 migrations, and Joomla 1.5 and 2.5 are excluded.
Extensions by extension or by site
Group pending extension updates by extension to patch one extension everywhere it is installed, or by site to bring one site fully up to date.
Per-extension auto-updates
Choose the extensions you trust to update themselves, one by one. This is a Joomla feature in mySites.guru; everything else waits for you.
One update at a time per server
The update queue applies one update at a time on each server, so a host with many of your sites is not hit by all of them together. It is on by default for new accounts.
Back up first with Backup All
Backups are not taken automatically before an update. Backup All starts a backup on every site in your current filter, so you can take a restore point before a big batch.

Patch the sites that matter first

When a vulnerable extension is disclosed, the Joomla vulnerability scanner flags every site running an affected version. Filter to those sites, back them up, then update that one extension across all of them. Running WordPress as well? The same workflow is on the WordPress bulk update page.

Common questions

Can I upgrade Joomla 4 sites to Joomla 5 in bulk?
No. Bulk core updates stay within a major version, so a 5.x site moves to the latest 5.x and a 4.x site to the latest 4.x. Moving from 3 to 4 or from 4 to 5 is a migration, and bulk updates do not attempt it. Joomla 1.5 and 2.5 sites are left out of bulk core updates altogether.
Can I pick which extensions get updated?
Yes. Pending extension updates can be grouped by extension, so you update one extension on every site that has it, or by site, so you work through one site at a time. Nothing is updated until you choose it.
Can extensions update themselves?
Yes, on Joomla. You can turn on auto-updates per extension, so an extension you trust updates without you, while the rest wait for you to approve them. How per-extension auto-updates work.
Will a big batch of updates overload my server?
The update queue runs one update at a time per server, so twenty sites on one host are updated one after another rather than all at once. It is on by default for new accounts. Why the queue works per server.
Does mySites.guru back up a site before updating it?
Not automatically. Back up first with Backup All, which starts a backup on every site in your current filter at once. Backups run through Akeeba Backup Professional; the website backups page explains what you need.
Is bulk updating part of the free audit?
The free audit covers one site, needs no card, and shows where that site stands today, including whether its Joomla version is current. Updating across many sites is what the paid plans are for: £5/month for one site or £19.99/month for unlimited sites.
